The Wandering Harpist of Medieval Ireland

In medieval Gaelic society, harpers held a place of unusual honor, often ranking alongside poets and praised in the same breath as nobles. The wire-strung Irish harp had a bright, bell-like ring, and a master could play three modes the tradition described as the music of weeping, the music of laughter, and the music of sleep.
